China Offers $1 Million In Cash Donations to the Typhoon Victims in the Philippines

INTERNATIONAL: China has offered $1 Million in cash donations and another 4,725 tons of rice on Wednesday to help the victims of Typhoon Rai in the Philippines.

Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian has announced the assistance at a handover ceremony, bringing China’s total donation to 10,000 tons of rice.

The Director of National Resource and Logistics Management Bureau, Emmanuel Privado, under the Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development, has expressed his thanks the Chinese government for its generosity.

"We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the people of the People's Republic of China for these donations. It's so timely for the typhoon victims that they could receive this rice. Thank you very much. Thank you to the people of China," said Privado.

The emergency cash assistance will support the relief and recovery efforts of the Philippine government and people, Huang said, expressing hope that the fresh batch of rice will contribute to the Philippine humanitarian relief operations in typhoon-hit areas.

"China and Philippines have a very fine tradition as neighbors to help each other to support each other in trying times. So,this is another difficult time for the Filipino people. We will do our best to continue to support your government and your people's efforts to help those people in need," said Huang.

On Tuesday, the Chinese Embassy in Manila has prepared 20,000 food packages containing rice, canned food, and noodles packs. Huang has said the relief goods had already reached typhoon-affected areas such as Cebu, Leyte, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Bohol, Cagayan de Oro City, and Surigao City, among others.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte declared Tuesday night a state of calamity in several regions to speed up relief efforts for victims of Typhoon Rai.

Typhoon Rai, which battered the Philippines last week, affected more than 1.3 million people and is feared to have killed at least 375 in the country’s central and southern regions, as well as parts of the main island of Luzon.
